Running models locally vs using a hosted generator

By Scott Dommett. Updated September 5, 2026.

Every studio tested here runs open weights you could download and launch yourself. The question is whether you should.

What local needs

A recent GPU with plenty of VRAM. Image generation runs on mid-range cards; video generation now demands the high end. A Mac handles images if you wait, and chokes on video. You also need ComfyUI or an equivalent frontend, model files pulled from Civitai or Hugging Face, and several evenings to climb the learning curve.

What local gives

Full freedom. Full control. No credits. Nothing leaves your machine. Any checkpoint, any LoRA, any workflow you build.

What hosted gives

The same weights without buying silicon, plus the interface labor already done: character builders, galleries, video pipelines. Sogni, WildOwl and Mage serve current open models; the adult-focused tools run their own trained weights.

The crossover

Generate daily with a capable GPU? Local pays for itself in months. Generate weekly, or want video, or work from a laptop? Hosted costs less and runs faster. Each tool page scores value assuming you pay for access; the “Instead of Stable Diffusion run locally” guide covers the reverse calculation.
